Web privacy

March 20th, 2008 by Michael Smyth

Using the web is like talking to a friend, only you’re talking really loud in a crowded area.

The other day I was browsing the web when I decided I would treat myself to a CD from www.amazon.co.uk.
So I typed in the URL and went to the home page, something strange then happened, the ‘Recommended products’ banner across the top of the page was displaying the things I own, it was like “Hey I have one of them, and that, and that, oh and one of them”.

What was going on this is too strange to be coincidence?
Moments later I realised that these products where very similar to items I had previously purchased from Amazon, bearing in mind I was not logged in at this point.

Amazon must have remembered what kinds of products I like, and was attempting to target sell suitable items to me again.

It made me think, how much of the web is targeted to us, without us realising it.

The point here is that when using the web almost everything is recorded, so we need to be conscious about what information we divulge, as it could fall into the wrong hands.

Information is power! There are criminals out there who want your details for a number of malicious reasons.
