Virtual reality - Virtually real market
February 27th, 2008 by Michael SmythThe advertising boom of the 20’s and 30’s was a result of a strong worldwide economy, thus normal people having spare capital to purchase products.
Naturally consumers needed a product and businesses needed to sell products, this lead to many brands actively promoting their products via bill boards, posters, flyers and later Television.
Recently as global brand competition has increased along with consumer spending, businesses have imposed their adverts into ever corner of today’s media.
Coca cola will pay literally millions of pounds for an actor to take a sip from one of their products during a scene of a popular movie.
Brand marketers pay incomprehensible amounts of money for just pixels of advertising space on websites with high traffic.
This demand for marketing space has proved over time that any new medium will been plagued by adverts until they engulf the next new medium.
Marketers welcome to new medium of virtual reality!
There has been a recent craze for applications such as ‘Second Life’.
These applications allow the user to create a unique identity and alias, and then roam a virtual world pursuing normal day to day activities.
Sure you can fly but wouldn’t you if there was no laws of physics in the universe.
The technologies powering these applications are still primitive, but the ideas are not.
Over time these virtual worlds will improve until the eventually mirror real life, apart from the rules and regulations.
It is said that in the near future when you walk down the street and look at a billboard it is just as important for advertisers to have a virtual billboard for when you’re walking around online.
It is crucial for a business to explore all avenues of marketing and keep up with current and future trends to avoid being left behind.
