Xerox 8265 - Media Feed problems

April 3rd, 2008 by David Davies

When printing on the Xerox 8265, it is important to be sure that media will release from the supply roll when the end of roll is reached.

If the print media does not release from the core on the supply roll when the end of roll is reached, the media tension detector will register that the media is too tight, and will apply power to the feed roller with the aim of feeding more paper off the roll. But in fact the unreleased paper will now begin to be pulled back onto the roll (albeit print side inwards).

This leads to the paper becoming even tighter, and the roll will continue to be powered. At best the print heads will simply print to and fro across the same strip until the job is finished - resulting in a pool of ink. At worst, as I have seen on one occasion, the print heads will create the pool of ink, and when the main paper feed stops trying to move the media forwards, the paper will be pulled back through the machine and rolled onto the supply roller, complete with the big pool of ink which will then soak through all the roll, potentially wasting an entire roll of material, including the ink and time used to print it.

There is no solution - you can only work round by ensuring that the machine is never left to run to the end of the roll unless you are confident that the paper will be released.

The particular media with which I have experienced the problem is Xerox Premium Flag Banner.
