The cheek of it!… all in the name of charity.

December 5th, 2007 by Mark Hampson

One thing that always happens around Christmas time at everydayprint is an influx of calendars. We get asked to print calendars for a wide section of industries, ranging from personal family calendars, small (and large) local businesses and charities. One that caught my eye in my day-to-day artwork list (for reasons that will become apparent if you read on!) was a Charity calendar for Liverpool Vets (that’s Veterinary as in animals, not to be confused with retired military personnel).

James McIntosh from the Liverpool University Veterinary Society (LUVS) http://www.liv.ac.uk/vets/ contacted us about the production of this year’s calendar…

He commented “Each year Liverpool University Veterinary Society (LUVS), which represents the veterinary faculty student body selects a couple of charities that funds are raised for throughout the academic year. One such fundraising effort is the production of a naked calendar each year, which is sold within the faculty to raise money for these charities.”

“The charities that are supported by LUVS this year are SPANA (http://www.spana.org/) which provides veterinary treatment and education to improve welfare of animals throughout North and West Africa and the Middle East. These animals are often vital for working use in these areas and without them people may suffer severe economic hardship. The other charity is The Clare Harrison Memorial Fund which raises money for vet students in financial difficulties in memory of Clare Harrison; a vet student who tragically died in 1995 in a horse riding accident.”

As an artwork and graphic design bod, I don’t often get asked to do naked charity calendars but I had to jump at the chance (as it was either that or do a business card for a plumber in Bolton, not that I mind that kind of thing, but given the choice… a difficult one I’m sure you’ll agree).

The calendar will be sold on-campus and not available in the shops (surely instant celebrity status around Liverpool for those appearing in it, had it been sold in the local shops!). James Herriot’s world never looked quite like this…
