Recycling in the Print Industry

April 24th, 2008 by Tracy

In an effort to be environmentally friendly, Ricoh reuse and recycle their digital printers instead of scrapping them as used to be the practice. In addition to becoming one of the top companies in the commercial print sector, they are also a leader in supporting the environment. Ricoh opened the Green Centre in 2004 to manage the return of all machines, parts, and supplies for recycling, including multifunctional office printers to mid-volume digital presses.

Ricoh has been environmentally conscious since the mid-1970s and in 1992 formed Green Principles, which included being carbon neutral, employing zero-waste techniques, providing advanced recycling programs, designing environmentally friendly products, and reducing CO2 emissions.

Ricoh products are also designed to save energy with the printers and presses among the lowest for energy consumption and CO2 emissions. They claim to have virtually eliminated ozone output from their products. Ricoh saves energy on its products through fast duplexing, quick start-up, organic toners, and ultra-low sleep mode. They also recycle old parts. If a part is needed, it is taken from an old machine instead of buying a new one thereby keeping costs down. They even recycle the cardboard used in the packaging of new machines.
